Biomouv – patient engagement through tele-rehabilitation

For this year’s VivaTech event, Europe’s largest innovation and startup show, we are reporting on high-impact e-health startups that will be present at the Orange Lab during the event.

In this article we look at Biomouv,  a company established to help patients manage their chronic illnesses with personalized, AI-based therapeutic programs.

According to the World Health Organization, chronic (or non-communicable diseases - NCDs) kill 40 million people each year, equivalent to 70% of all deaths globally. The main types of NCDs are cardiovascular diseases (like heart attacks and stroke), cancers, chronic respiratory diseases (such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and asthma) and diabetes.   The economic impact of chronic illnesses is difficult to assess but the numbers are staggering. A recent study by RTI International for the American Heart Association projects that cardiovascular disease costs alone will exceed $1 trillion by 2035 in the USA.

Managing Chronic Illnesses – An Essential Investment

Chronic illness management prevents complications and disabilities through frequent monitoring.   Patients with chronic illnesses need to be continually vigilant about their condition to keep it stable, controlled, and manageable.  Evidence shows that the management of chronic diseases, through their detection, screening and treatment, are excellent economic investments. If provided early to patients, they can reduce the need for more expensive treatment.

Biomouv, AI and connected therapeutic programs

Biomouv is a start-up based in Montpellier, France that has invented the first artificial intelligence (AI)-based solution  that generates connected therapeutic programs for physical activity and nutrition.  Biomouv produces personalized rehabilitation programs for patients with chronic diseases. These make it possible to extend recovery programs beyond the walls of hospitals and healthcare facilities, via tele-rehabilitation. Ultimately, they can enable better patient outcomes and prevent more costly treatment.

How does it work?

The Biomouv solution includes over 200 configurable parameters that generate a personalized program in line with the patient’s pathology, profile, objectives and preferences, including:

  • Physical activity sessions adapted in real time.
  • A dedicated dietary program.
  • Regular tests to measure progress.

Data relating to vital biomarkers is collected by connected sensors and objects (blood pressure monitors, heart rate monitors, oximeters, fitness monitors, etc). The data is analyzed to provide feedback that permits the patient to obtain targeted physiological results. The solution also interacts with sports equipment and fitness machines in order to track a patient’s physical activity. Patients and their caregivers can access data via a web application on their mobile phones, tablets or personal computers.  Data is stored securely and in strict conformance with data privacy regulations.

The solution, which has been validated by medical professionals, enriches the relationship between patients and health professionals.

Biomouv and Orange

In partnership with Orange, Biomouv are launching the first customized physical activity program connected and adapted in real-time. The program will target breast cancer patients at the Léon Bérard cancer clinic in Lyon.

You can meet the Biomouv team at the Orange Lab at Viva Technology in Paris, 15 to 17 of June, 2017.
