Modernizing payment infrastructure under strict financial regulations

PayEx specializes in invoicing, financing, and payment services across the Nordic region. The company sought a cloud solution that could deploy innovative payment services in a reliable, scalable, and secure environment to meet changing customer demands for continuous high availability. This modernization initiative supports PayEx’s ongoing focus on optimizing performance, creating added business value, improving operational efficiency, and lowering total operating costs. Specifically, PayEx needed an agile architecture that could scale the organization and modernize its PCI DSS (Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard) services across more than 60,000 active payment terminal units. Operating in the financial sector requires strict adherence to supervisory regulations that have historically evolved more slowly than cloud technology. Without prior in-house cloud implementation history, PayEx needed an expert partner to build a compliant, secure cloud environment.

Modernization goals

PayEx defined three core requirements to transition critical transaction processing to the public cloud while preserving operational integrity and regulatory trust across all markets.

Modernize PCI DSS services across 60,000+ payment terminals
Achieve continuous high availability and lower operational costs
Establish automated cloud pipelines adhering to financial governance

A fully managed, PCI DSS-compliant Kubernetes platform in Microsoft Azure

To execute this migration, PayEx partnered with Orange Business, drawing on an established relationship dating back to 2011 when an Orange Business subsidiary began hosting PayEx’s legacy on-premise PCI DSS environment. Orange Business evaluated multiple options to match PayEx’s operational platform while remaining fully compatible with existing on-premise processes. Orange Business engineered a public cloud architecture hosted in Microsoft Azure, using Kubernetes as the open-source container orchestration engine. Orange Business delivered a fully managed Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS) environment engineered specifically for rigorous PCI DSS compliance. This foundation provides an automated continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) framework combined with enterprise-grade protection. The framework was tailored to let PayEx deploy and operate its payment processing system and credit card handling engine safely in Microsoft Azure, showing how container workloads can maintain compliance while gaining cloud agility.

Scalable performance, certified governance, and future-ready cloud agility

Orange Business enabled PayEx to successfully transition its payment processing operations into Microsoft Azure without disrupting active terminals or compromising regulatory compliance. The automated deployment pipeline significantly accelerates feature rollouts while maintaining verifiable PCI DSS controls across 60,000+ terminal devices. By offloading platform management and Kubernetes operations to Orange Business, PayEx benefits from high service availability, lower total cost of operations, and predictable scaling during transaction peaks. The modern infrastructure reinforces customer trust and loyalty across the Nordic payments ecosystem. With its Azure container foundation proven in production, PayEx has strengthened its competitive standing and is preparing to migrate more enterprise workloads to containerized cloud environments.
