Xpandretail powers faster decision-making with Live Objects
As it expands its footprint across malls and retail outlets in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region, the complexity of managing multiple devices and locations is growing.
Its ecosystem includes various sensors and devices from different manufacturers, each with its own protocols, dashboards, and monitoring limitations. This fragmented setup made it extremely difficult to track device status consistently, whether sensors are online or offline, transmitting accurate data, or experiencing sudden spikes and behavioral anomalies.
Legacy systems compounded this initial challenge by lacking scalability, modern IoT integration, and real-time monitoring capabilities. Valuable time was spent reconciling disparate systems instead of focusing on analysis and client needs.
A secure cloud platform for managing IoT devices and data
Xpandretail selected Live Objects from Orange Business because it offers a comprehensive and scalable platform that is purpose-built for managing heterogeneous IoT ecosystems.
Live Objects from Orange Business delivers a secure cloud-based platform to help Xpandretail manage the full lifecycle of IoT devices and data
An easy way to manage connected devices and their data
This shift toward a unified device monitoring and data aggregation platform is central to Xpandretail’s strategy of delivering reliable, scalable, and future-ready retail analytics.
Xpandretail sought a solution to transform its fragmented IoT environment into a unified, secure, real-time device management platform. This would enable the company to deliver consistent, accurate, and actionable insights to its retail clients. Orange’s Live Objects ticked all the boxes regarding technology, trust, and connected device experience. Now, the Xpandretail team manages 100 thousand plus devices every day.
Orange’s Live Objects serves as Xpandretail's IoT backbone, aggregating data from diverse, multi-vendor devices into a unified environment.
Live Objects handles device integration and secure data aggregation, while the Xpandretail portal transforms that data into business intelligence - delivering a seamless, easy-to-use dashboard experience for clients.
Xpandretail extracts device data directly into its portal through its secure API framework, where its in-house analytics engine takes over. The incoming IoT data is processed within the portal to generate real-time KPIs such as footfall counts, dwell times, occupancy, anomalies, and device status. Its analytics engine applies business rules, filtering, and enrichment to transform raw data into actionable insights.
Each client has a dedicated “soft tenant” environment inside Xpandretail’s platform. This ensures logical separation of data, so a mall operator, for example, only sees their locations and devices. This model allows Xpandretail to scale quickly across multiple clients without heavy infrastructure duplication.
Xpandretail’s dashboards are designed to present insights in a usable and transparent way. The company’s clients access intuitive, web-based interfaces to view performance metrics, track trends, and drill down into location-specific data. The dashboards are role-based, so decision-makers, store managers, and operations teams see the level of detail most relevant to them.
Before full-scale deployment, Xpandretail piloted the solution to validate performance, integration, and analytics capabilities. The pilot was conducted in selected high-traffic retail locations, deploying dozens of IoT devices across multiple store zones.
The pilot confirmed the solution's reliability and scalability and provided valuable insights that helped Xpandretail fine-tune device placement, analytics configuration, and reporting features, ensuring maximum value for their clients during full rollout.
Data is secured in the cloud
The IoT platform leverages secure cloud infrastructure to protect Xpandretail’s data while delivering a seamless, always-on experience. This ensures a robust foundation for scalable, trusted business operations.
The data collected through the plethora of IoT devices and aggregated via Live Objects is securely hosted on Amazon Web Services (AWS), ensuring enterprise-grade security, high availability, and robust data protection.
AWS’s global compliance framework, including certifications such as ISO 27001, SOC 2, and GDPR, assures Xpandretail clients that their sensitive retail and visitor information is managed with the highest security and reliability standards.
Currently, Xpandretail operates exclusively within its secure AWS environment. This centralized approach allows the company to maintain consistency, efficiency, and compliance with internationally recognized best practices in data protection.
Xpandretail fully manages the solution, with Orange’s Live Objects as the core IoT platform. Xpandretail takes end-to-end responsibility for device onboarding, data aggregation, monitoring, and maintenance, ensuring that clients can rely on a seamless and reliable service without the need to manage the underlying infrastructure.
This approach reduces operational overheads for retailers and mall operators, providing faster deployment and scaling across multiple sites and regions. Proactive monitoring ensures minimal downtime and continuous data flow. Consistent security and compliance are provided, with all device management and data handling overseen by experienced teams.
Valuable insights for smart decision making
The connected IoT devices that Live Objects aggregates data from, including smart cameras, generate a range of actionable analytics once processed, which help retailers and mall operators optimize their operations.
By handling device deployment, remote updates, security, and performance monitoring in a single platform, Live Objects simplifies IoT operations for Xpandretail and helps its clients quickly turn raw data into actionable insights.
Key insights from footfall counting include unique versus repeat visitors; dwell time analysis to identify how long customers spend in particular zones; customer demographics, and heat map analysis highlighting the most visited shopping mall or store areas.
Xpandretail’s IoT solution, incorporating Live Objects, is currently deployed across various retail malls, stores, and brands in the GCC. It is helping shopping centers, supermarkets, fashion outlets, electronics stores, and large-format retailers gain real-time insights into customer behavior and footfall trends. Outlets include Coach, Dior and Michael Kors.
Turning data into intelligence
Xpandretail’s teams have highlighted Live Object’s capabilities in terms of reliability, scalability, and smooth integration across a growing and diverse set of devices in multiple retail environments.
At the same time, Orange Business has established itself as a trusted partner for Xpandretail, delivering an innovative solution and reliable support. This supports its roadmap in the connected world, including driving AI analytics.
Xpandretail plans to expand the deployment of its IoT-driven analytics solution to additional retail stores and malls across the GCC and India. This will allow more clients to benefit from real-time footfall insights, customer behavior analytics, and operational optimization.
Xpandretail plans to use Live Object’s scalability to explore future verticals, such as airports, event venues, and public sector spaces, by easily adapting the platform to different environments to enhance operations.
