Kantar modernizes comms with cloud telephony to lower costs and increase flexibility

Moving from legacy to cloud-based telephony has challenges with migration, integration with existing systems, compliance, and change management.

A seamless solution to simplify and secure communications

Orange Business deployed Microsoft Direct Routing and Operator Connect as part of its Business Talk and Business Together with Microsoft solutions. This hybrid approach supports distributed enterprises with varied telephony across regions.

Global coverage, lower costs and flexibility
Carrier diversity and cost optimization
Security, business continuity, and redundancy

Orange Business delivered a cloud-based telephony solution to support the capabilities Kantar needed for its broader business objectives.

Delivering a dynamic and versatile communications solution

Kantar, a global leader in marketing data and analytics, provides market research, consulting, and data-driven insights to help brands and organizations understand consumer behavior and make informed decisions. It sought to upgrade its legacy telephony system to a cloud-based solution, aiming to modernize its communications, support its business vision, and foster an agile working culture. This was a significant and challenging transformation for the multinational, which operates in over 90 global markets. Following an extensive RFP, Kantar chose to work with Orange Business as a trusted partner, seeing its global connectivity capabilities, integration skills, and enhanced employee and customer experience.

Kantar was keen to follow an evergreen strategy to ensure its transformation supported its roadmap, providing continuous value without costly updates. The company was going through significant changes, and it was also worried about moving from legacy telephony to the cloud due to integration complexity and possible business disruption. However, it had faith in Orange Business and its integration skills.

As a result of the transformation, the company was looking to unite communications across the organization, simplify multi-location management, reduce costs, and be able to flex when the business flexes.

The project scope included sites that required a cloud-based telephony solution, with some sites requiring local Session Border Control in highly regulated countries.

Microsoft Teams was chosen under the overarching Orange Business Talk banner, incorporating Operator Connect and Direct Routing. This enables full Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) capabilities within Microsoft Teams.

Orange Business provides Microsoft Teams tenant management for voice, ensuring a robust communication infrastructure. This includes the deployment and ongoing operational support of call flows and enterprise voice users, as well as the management of physical IP phones. Furthermore, user management, including moves, adds, and changes (MACs), is fully automated through a bespoke "Orange application" that leverages Kantar’s Active Directory (AD), streamlining administrative tasks.

Operator Connect is a streamlined, fully managed service that enables Kantar to directly connect Teams to certified telecom operators through the Microsoft Teams Admin Center. This eliminates the need to manage complex telephony infrastructure or on-premises Session Border Controllers (SBCs). It supports automated provisioning and simplified number management via Microsoft 365.

In contrast, Business Talk solutions like Direct Routing are targeted at complex environments requiring customized configurations. They are designed to provide maximum flexibility by enabling organizations to connect to their own Session Border Controllers (SBCs) or specific carriers, for example. This allows for custom call routing and any necessary integration with legacy systems.

Direct Routing’s flexibility provides many benefits to multinationals with compliance needs where local trunking or custom dial plans are necessary, for example.

Through this hybrid approach, Orange Business offers Kantar the ability to reduce costs while enhancing flexibility and geographic reach by using a hybrid of the two.

Secure, cost-effective business continuity

Using the Operator Connect and Direct Routing hybrid approach provides several significant security and business continuity advantages to Kantar, particularly in meeting its complex and distributed business requirements.

Security is enhanced through granular control over traffic routing and compliance-sensitive configurations, leveraging Microsoft and operator-grade protections. For business continuity, reliable, always-on communications are provided via diverse, redundant routing paths and seamless integration with critical solutions.

The extensive integration skills that Orange Business has were instrumental in transitioning Kantar from its legacy telephony to a cloud-based Microsoft Teams solution through its Business Talk option.

A robust global cloud telephony solution for greater control and better budgeting

When Kantar wanted to set up telephony connections in highly regulated countries such as China, where Orange does not have a direct operator license, it deployed an AudioCodes Session Border Controller (SBC). This basically acts as a secure smart translator between the cloud services and the local Chinese telecom infrastructure. As part of the scope, SBCs were deployed in a plethora of highly regulated countries.

This approach ensures regulatory compliance, maintains quality of service, and extends global reach efficiently and securely.

  • Regulatory compliance
  • Secure connectivity
  • Interoperability
  • Reliability and quality of service

Smarter calling, enhanced collaboration, greater efficiency

Moving to a Microsoft Teams-based cloud telephony system has provided Kantar with a unified communications interface based on an evergreen strategy that combines global communications into a single interface. This consolidation has already made significant improvements over its legacy system. It has enhanced employee productivity and experience, reduced complexity, and allowed seamless communication across distributed offices.

The move has also enabled Kantar to reduce costs by over 50% compared to legacy telephony systems. Direct routing has allowed it to leverage existing SIP trunk providers at competitive rates. At the same time, Operator Connect has simplified provisioning and management without additional hardware, allowing for a centralized picture of communications spend to budget more easily across global offices.
