Green IT and Orange Business Services

Green IT is at the heart of our strategy and we support our customers’ transition into sustainable business

Our environmental policy is two-fold. We lead by example by reducing our own environmental impact through a continually improved performance, and we develop and launch products and services that contribute to environmental protection, particularly in the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.

At a Group level, we intend to cut CO2 emissions by 20% from 2006 to 2020 in spite of our anticipated business growth of 50% over the same period. Because our data centers account for close to 20% of total energy consumption, they are the target of our Green Datacenters project, which involves:

more efficient air conditioning and electrical supplies

new servers with up to four times greater processing capacity

limiting the number of applications in service and monitor energy consumption

virtualizing servers to remove the need for additional hardware.

We have virtualized more than 8,000 servers to date, providing energy savings of more than 14GWh and reduced electricity consumption by 15% by using more efficient cooling.

For our staff, we’ve widely adopted a flexible working program, enabled by products such as Business Everywhere, to optimize staff working methods and remove the need for unnecessary journeys. Internal use of conferencing and telepresence solutions have reduced the need for air travel, providing substantial CO2 savings.

We also operate a fleet of over 16,000 clean, lower-emission vehicles, including electric cars and vans, hybrids, small capacity vehicles and engines with a stop-and-start feature.

When developing our solutions, we use the principle of “eco design.” This means that we consider environmental criteria from the very earliest stages of product development and track them throughout the entire product lifecycle – from design and creation, through packaging, distribution and logistics, to usage and disposal.

We are able to provide consultancy services to support your sustainable IT initiatives, assisting with topics such as the consolidation of infrastructure, deferring new IT purchases, managing the evolution of infrastructure with an eye on energy consumption, and creating green IT governance plans.
