Orange case studies

with a strong network and computing portfolio, we have proven expertise in delivering cloud computing services

We have proven expertise in cloud services, thanks to a strong existing portfolio and hundreds of cloud computing specialists worldwide. In addition to managing 12,000 servers for enterprise customers, we can design, build and operate private clouds for large multinationals.
Several companies have already benefited from our cloud computing solutions, including:

a luxury brands multinational

We deliver a complete Private Applications Store, including messaging, IM, archiving, mobility, conferencing, large file exchange and Web security, where employees can access the services they require through a personalized portal, without having to download anything onto their PC. Applications are accessible from any location and device, such as office, home, remote connection or smartphone. The service is deployed on a dedicated infrastructure in our data centers and charged on a pay-as-you-go basis.

a leader in the insurance sector

We host its e-commerce website on our Flexible Computing Premium platform. Faced with a highly seasonal business that trebles traffic to its website during two months of the year, this company now benefits from a rapidly scalable platform charged according to usage, performance guarantees and the assurance that its website will be fully available to support this critical seasonal business.

Orange Ecocenter project

In addition, we can bring our experience of internal virtualization projects to bear on any cloud computing project. Key amongst these is our Ecocenter project launched in 2006, which was a huge program of consolidation and virtualization of our data centers.

Facing an increase of around 20% per year in the number of our servers, we wanted to make virtualization technology a key driver in optimizing our IT resources. This was a major strategic challenge, as we had 17,000 servers, spread out over an area of 25,000m2 and hosting no fewer than 5,000 applications.

Within the space of two years we consolidated our infrastructure into fewer than 8,000 virtual servers. These figures make the Group the leading integrator in France, the fifth in Europe and tenth worldwide.

Key figures from the project include:
  • more than 11,000 virtual servers created in three years
  • up to 18 servers hosted on a single physical server
  • savings of €17 million achieved and another €17 million expected by mid-2011
  • reduced consumption of 14 gigawatts/hour in France over 3 years. This represents a 30% energy saving in data centers and a reduction in the quantity of CO₂ emitted in the region of 1255 tons, the equivalent of what a car would release into the atmosphere by going around the world 261 times
  • optimum utilization of server resources at 60% (as against 5% for x86 servers and 12% for UNIX servers)
  • server creation that goes from several weeks to just a few hours
