Network technologies under the microscope
We are in the era of the digital individual. Consider ‘smart’ homes. Ten years ago most homes only had a TV set and a computer. Today, research shows that the average UK home has 7.4 internet devices, and that is just the ‘screens’, such as smartphones, TVs and tablets.
The Internet of Things continues to drive new and exciting projects. Here in my home of Dubai, smart city initiatives are underway designed to transform infrastructure, under the umbrella of the Dubai Plan 2021 which was launched at the end of 2014.
With mobility now firmly embedded in the enterprise psyche, there isn’t a single IT department that isn’t under pressure from users who want to access corporate data from their mobile.
All too often we focus attention on the devices, services and locations that merge to create a comprehensive digital workplace ecosystem – but we must not forget the employee experience which is the real purpose of the project.
Software-defined networking (SDN) and network function virtualization (NFV) are built on the concept of open standards and open source, but there is more than one organization pushing SDN openness. Two have recently opted to merge.
